ESA's Rosetta was the first mission to rendezvous with a comet, the first to follow one around the Sun, and the first to deploy a lander to a comet's surface. Launched 2 March 2004 on an Ariane 5 G+ from Kourou, it used three Earth gravity assists and one Mars gravity assist, flew past asteroids Steins and Lutetia, hibernated for 31 months, and arrived at Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on 6 August 2014. It released the Philae lander on 12 November 2014 and ended with a controlled descent onto the comet on 30 September 2016.

    Deployment of the Philae lander was confirmed at 09:03 GMT (10:03 CET) on 12 November 2014 at a distance of 22.5 km from the centre of the comet, beginning a roughly seven-hour descent.

  12. Landing

    Philae lands on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

    The first soft landing on a comet. The signal confirming successful touchdown arrived on Earth at 16:03 GMT (17:03 CET) on 12 November 2014, at a landing site named Agilkia on the head of the double-lobed nucleus. The anchoring harpoons did not fire and Philae made contact with the surface three times, rebounding from Agilkia before coming to rest at a site later named Abydos on the comet's smaller lobe.

  13. Loss of contact

    Philae falls silent as its primary battery is exhausted

    Philae completed 80% of its planned first science sequence before falling into hibernation in the early hours of 15 November 2014 when the primary battery was exhausted.

  14. Milestone

    Philae wakes from hibernation and contacts Earth

    Signals from Philae were received at ESA's European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt at 22:28 CEST on 13 June 2015. Philae 'spoke' with its team for 85 seconds, via Rosetta, in the first contact since going into hibernation in November 2014.

    Rosetta's OSIRIS narrow-angle camera imaged Philae wedged into a dark crack on the comet at Abydos on the smaller lobe, less than a month before the end of the mission.

  17. Mission end

    Controlled descent onto the comet ends the mission

    Rosetta carried out its final manoeuvre the previous night at 20:50 GMT (22:50 CEST), setting it on a collision course with the comet from an altitude of about 19 km, targeting a region on the small lobe close to a region of active pits in the Ma'at region. Confirmation of the end of the mission arrived at ESA's control centre in Darmstadt at 11:19 GMT (13:19 CEST) with the loss of Rosetta's signal upon impact.
